The Alien Species Challenge provides information on the introduction and distribution of alien species in the Arctic Ocean, and on the impact on the ecosystem and economy. Collected information includes taxonomy, geography, introduced range and year of introduction, vector or reason for introduction and impacts. Maps are constructed showing the area in the Arctic where the species is introduced.
From the search for information from databases, it appeared that there is no actual or complete list on Arctic alien species available. Therefore, scientific literature was consulted to construct a list of species, which now accounts 94 species (58 crustaceans, 13 algae, 9 Chordata, 14 others). Required information for these species is collected. For well-known invasive species compiled information can be found relevant for this challenge, however, for many species compiled information is not or only partly available. Most databases that deal with alien species do not include the Arctic region, whereas databases that concern the Arctic region, do not, or only partly cover the species identified to be alien.
All collected information will be stored in a factsheet and later shown on a map.
